Mortal Shell 2 Patch Notes & Update Tracker
Two patches have shipped since Mortal Shell 2 launched on August 20, 2026. The Week 1 Update (August 29) rewrote the upgrade economy — Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite, Shells can be respecced, and Fragile Tarstones were added — while the September 5 update introduced an optional Adaptive Difficulty mode and buffed Sariel. This page summarises what each patch changes for players and links to the full official notes; it is updated when a new patch is published.

September 5, 2026 — Adaptive Difficulty update
Published on Steam as "New Update Out Now". The official notes do not carry a version number.
Adaptive Difficulty (experimental, off by default)
- Where: Game > Game Settings > Adaptive Difficulty. Can be toggled at any time.
- If you keep winning: enemies gain damage, health and break resistance, and keep scaling past the game's standard ceiling for as long as you avoid dying.
- If you keep dying: the same three values fall, and a cap stops any single attack taking more than a set fraction of your health, so you cannot be killed from full health in one hit.
- Night Mode exception: reductions never apply in Night Mode — it can only be made harder.
- No on-screen indicator yet: the game does not currently show when it has adjusted; the developers say a display is planned.
Shell changes
- Sariel (buffed): Thornfall works in enclosed spaces, prioritises locked-on targets and hits moving targets; Agonize no longer requires full Pain; Affliction now shares damage to all cursed enemies and curses non-cursed ones. Expect Sariel to climb the Shell tier list.
- Genessa (fixed/nerfed): Augmentation no longer allows infinite Resolve gain or infinite Faithful Doubles — see the Genessa guide.
Combat, items and farming
- Consecutive parries with the Infinite Seal have a wider window, so strings of hits can be parried rather than only the first.
- Status effects can be applied while enemies get back up after a riposte.
- Grisha Summons can no longer be hit by player projectiles, freeze during Smert's Miracle, and attack less often.
- Gloom drops on death are easier to retrieve; the Gloombound Stone no longer loses durability when recovering your own Gloom. Fragile Tarstones now properly grant Tarcores when they break.
- Leech stacks no longer save and re-apply on top of themselves (closes a health exploit). Axe & Dagger running attack animation improved.
Bosses, enemies and bugs
- Lost Child collision fixed (no more getting stuck inside him or launched). Malborn Offspring can no longer become invulnerable during its phase transition.
- Harpy frenzied attacks connect correctly; the Cursed Child's Summoning Stone can summon more enemy types; bats are back at the swamp beacon in the opening region.
- Fixed a lock-out of Baghead's quest in NG+, falling through the ground when leaving dungeons, a boss arena staying locked after the fight, and Citadel Annex spider traversal.
- Damage numbers display up to 9,999 instead of capping at 999; smaller beacons show their own icons in the Mether's Breath fast-travel menu.
- PS5: opening a system pop-up no longer pauses the game, so the screenshot function works.

August 29, 2026 — The Week 1 Update
The first major patch, and the one that changes how you should plan a playthrough. Highlights that affect builds and routing:
Upgrade economy (big change)
- Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite — every Shell and Tarstone can be maxed in a single playthrough. See the updated Tarstone upgrade guide.
- Shell respec: give Mether's Severance to Zhirelle to sever a Shell bond, resetting it and refunding all spent Glimpses. Sold by Merrick, restocking as you progress.
- Fragile Tarstones: a new class that wears down and breaks, yielding a Tarcore. Includes the Glimpse Stone (breaks into Glimpses) and Egon's Stone (revive at a dungeon entrance; no Gloom loss on the death that breaks it). Justicar's and Gloombound Stones became Fragile with stronger effects.
- Tarstones return more Tarcores when tempered; Merrick and the Collector now sell Tarcores; the gloom siphon pays extra rewards including Glimpses. Mini-Beacons no longer award a Glimpse.
World and exploration
- New beacons across Fainweald and Mammon, active only during the day — the launch count on our beacon list is now a floor, not a total.
- A teleporter appears in one dungeon after the Grisha pit fight, removing the walk back. Two new cosmetic rewards unlock after certain questlines. Reward chests in the first two regions were revised.
Weapons and combat
- Obsidian Hammer received a full balance pass and hits substantially harder; the Great Martyr's Blade deals more damage; heavy weapons in general got a poise and damage pass — see the weapons tier list.
- Axatana: its weapon ability now grants invulnerability frames and inflicts Fragile stacks.
- Salvaged Trebuchaxe: the Tarred Fragment Tarstone was redesigned (it was "simultaneously overpowered and broken") — relevant to the sidearms tier list.
- Ripostes: damage now scales with enemy health (so it keeps up in late game, NG+ and Night Mode), invulnerability lasts through the whole animation, recoveries end sooner.
- Enemy tracking and magnetism maximums were restricted; Tarstones no longer keep gathering XP at max level.
Shells
- Eredrim's Shoulder Bash and Proxima's Biosampler no longer leave your weapon permanently stowed; Proxima can no longer get stuck in her hook shot.
- Genessa's dashes fixed, Faithful Doubles retarget when their target dies, Intangible works during grabs. Smert can destroy projectiles in permanent fight stance.
Bosses
- Monolith: laser and spin attacks no longer spam (a bug), hitboxes adjusted, and a double-damage bug fixed — the fight in our Monolith guide is now fairer than at launch.
- Zmey: the tail grab no longer takes both Shell and Harbinger from full to zero — except in Night Mode, where it still does. See the boss order.
- Hexapod has a smaller, lit arena and more splash damage; The Warden and Urrig were reworked with new ice attacks; Lost Child, Droeg, Sir Isaac, Orrem, Malborn Offspring, Magdalena and the Bloodcursed Lithopod all received fixes.
Exploits, softlocks and stability
- Fixed an infinitely respawning Grisha in one dungeon ("rip Grishamancer"), an infinite Ossinite farm and an unlimited-healing exploit — see the gloom farm guide for what still works.
- An interrupted save can no longer destroy your save file; a permanent lock-out in Vatra's Temple and several softlocks (Lazlo's Rekindle, the barkeep after Gragu, Hilga's Cauldron) were fixed.
- Performance: fewer enemies in the busiest areas, the post-shader-compilation hitch removed, frame drops while cleansing tar gates fixed. New "Increased Geometry Budgets" graphics option; frame generation reworked; Switch Pro controller support.

August 20, 2026 — Launch
Mortal Shell 2 released digitally on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox on August 20 after an Advance Access period for Devout Edition owners that began on August 17. Rock Paper Shotgun reports a balance patch on launch day; Cold Symmetry did not publish separate Steam notes for it. For editions, prices and PC requirements see the release and editions page.
Patch FAQ
- What is the latest Mortal Shell 2 update?
- The most recent patch was published on September 5, 2026. Its headline feature is an optional, experimental Adaptive Difficulty setting (Game > Game Settings > Adaptive Difficulty, off by default) that scales enemy damage, health and break resistance up when you keep winning and down when you keep dying.
- Does Mortal Shell 2 have an easy mode now?
- Not a traditional one. The Slayer Seal item works as an in-game easy mode but disables achievements on that save, which the developers have publicly acknowledged as a controversial choice. The September 5 Adaptive Difficulty option is a softer alternative: when you are struggling it weakens enemies and caps single hits so nothing can kill you from full health — except in Night Mode, which is never made easier.
- Was the gloom farm glitch patched?
- The Week 1 Update notes list a fix for a Grisha that respawned indefinitely in one dungeon and for an infinite Ossinite farm and an unlimited-healing exploit, and the September 5 update stops player projectiles hitting Grisha Summons. Treat the Grisha Remnant duplication trick as closed; ordinary enemy farms such as the Sunken Village sheep run still work.
- Do I need to start a new game after the Week 1 Update?
- No. The notes state that existing saves receive a compensatory cache of Tarcores if you had already levelled Tarstones, and existing Justicar's and Gloombound Stones were converted to the new Fragile versions automatically.
- What are the patch version numbers?
- Cold Symmetry titles its Steam announcements (Week 1 Update, New Update Out Now) rather than numbering them, and console storefronts show their own platform-specific version numbers. Use the dates on this page to match a patch across platforms.
