Every question, answered
- Is Mortal Shell 2 multiplayer or co-op?
- No. Mortal Shell 2 is strictly single-player — no co-op, no drop-in assistance, no PvP invasions. Developer Cold Symmetry has said no multiplayer is in development or planned, while acknowledging fan requests are on their radar.
- Is Mortal Shell 2 open world?
- Yes — the sequel moves from the first game's linear structure to an interconnected open world, described by the developers as expansive yet deliberately compact. Expect interlocking regions rather than an endless map.
- Is Mortal Shell 2 a Soulslike?
- Yes. Combat emphasizes posture breaks, critical strikes, dodging and punishing bosses — Eurogamer called it a Soulslike with tempo and verve. Unlike many Souls games, there is no stamina system restricting your actions.
- What platforms is Mortal Shell 2 on?
- PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. There are no last-generation or Switch versions.
- How much does Mortal Shell 2 cost?
- The Standard Edition is $49.99. The Devout Edition runs $59.99 and the Revered Edition $69.99 — Devout ownership included up to 72 hours of advanced access before the August 20 launch. Details are on our editions page.
- Does Mortal Shell 2 have difficulty settings?
- No — the settings contain no difficulty options or sliders. The in-game Slayer Seal item acts as a de facto easy mode, but equipping it disables achievements on that save, so treat it as a last resort.
- How long is Mortal Shell 2?
- Developers estimate 30-40 hours to complete — roughly triple the first game's 10-13 hours. Player data from HowLongToBeat puts a focused main-story run closer to 17 hours, with completionist runs at 50-60+ hours.
- How many endings does Mortal Shell 2 have?
- Two: the main story ending, where the Harbinger sends the Ova to the Heavens, and a secret Baghead ending. They are not mutually exclusive — both can be seen in a single playthrough.
- Is Mortal Shell 2 worth buying?
- Critics say yes: Metacritic sits in the mid-80s with about 86% of reviews positive, and IGN called it better in almost every way than the original. Steam user reviews are warmer than average but split — Mostly Positive around 77-78% overall (English reviews 78%), down from 88% during advanced access, with launch-window technical issues and balance complaints doing the damage. Half a million units sold in the first weekend.
- Mortal Shell 2 vs the first Mortal Shell — what changed?
- Scale is the headline: the 10-13 hour linear original became a 30-40 hour open world, with eight playable Shells, sidearms as a full ranged system and a rewritten progression built on Gloom, Tarstones and Ova. Critical consensus is that it is a genuine step up rather than a retread.
